Take a Picture

Taking a picture is a process of me gazing at a subject and a subject gazing at me at the same time. In other words, a picture represents a specific transformation captured by an artist's eyes at that very moment. Taking a picture is a process of compromising between an artist and a subject. Therefore, an image captured by a camera-eye can not perfectly represent a subject as a whole. A mirror reflects a subject in a similar manner. It's impossible for us to see ourselves as a whole. In order to do so, we depend on tools like mirrors and cameras. However, the way each tool is reflected is diverse according to uniqueness of its own medium. Also, the audience sees a projected image differently because each person has different vision. In "Take a Picture", I used a camera and a mirror to see myself as a whole. However, I only ended up seeing the image of a distorted ego captured on the shallow surface of the photographic print. Similarly, when the audiences see my works, they go through their own process of filtering and distorting. Through this film, I wanted to give deep thought about those issues that had habitually resided in me at times taking a picture. The audience can draw their own images as they watch "Take a Picture." In this film I intentionally forbid the audience to see a completed picture at each time. Instead, I enable them to see it through their own imagination. First, I present segmented pieces of an image and images I see in a dark room with background music. I don't demonstrate the image directly but hide some part, twist an angle, or show only negative print. Then, I give the audience a chance to reconstruct the picture from the images they saw. Throughout this process, I hope the audience can see my pictures interactively.
사진을 찍는 과정은 카메라를 통해 피사체를 바라봄과 동시에 피사체가 나를 바라보는 과정이다. 즉, 나의 시선과 피사체의 시선이 만나서 한 장의 사진이 만들어진다. 사진을 찍는 과정은 나와 피사체와의 교류의 과정이기에 카메라는 대상을 온전히 재현하지 못한다. 이것은 거울도 마찬가지다. 카메라와 거울은 우리는 스스로 우리 자신의 모습을 볼 수 있는 도구들이다. 하지만, 카메라와 거울은 매체가 지니는 특성에 따라 대상을 반영한다. 또한 결과물인 작업을 보는 사람 역시 마찬가지로 자기 자신만의 독특한 시각을 가지고 작가가 만든 이미지를 본다.
'사진찍다' 에서 나는 나를 보기 위해 카메라와 거울을 사용하지만 표면적인 이미지 안에는 깊이도 없을뿐더러 왜곡된 자아를 보게 된다. 마찬가지로 관객과 내가 찍은 사진과의 관계에 있어서도 관객은 (한 단계 왜곡되게 걸러진) 사진을 각자의 시선을 반영하여 자기만의 시각으로 이미지를 재구성할 수 있다. '사진찍다'에서 나는 사진 한 장을 관객들이 능동적으로 이미지 보기에 참여할 수 있는 기회를 제공하고자 하였다.
먼저 한 장의 사진의 분절된 이미지 조각들과 암실에서 사진을 인화하는 과정이 분절된 음악과 함께 제시한다. 이때 나는 사진을 바로 보여주지 않는다. 어느 부분을 숨기거나, 혹은 각도를 비틀거나, 인화 작업과정의 네거티브 이미지들을 보여준다. 그런 후 완성된 음악만 존재하는 시간 속에서 앞에서 보여진 이미지들을 음악을 기억의 도구 삼아 관객이 능동적으로 해석한 사진을 보는 기회를 제공하고자 하였다.
